Description

Sodium hydrosulfite (NaHSO3), also known as sodium bisulfite, is a chemical compound with strong reducing properties. It occurs as a white crystal or powder that dissolves well in water, forming an acidic solution. This compound is mainly produced by the absorption of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in sodium hydroxide solution. It is a substance that reacts easily with atmospheric oxygen, making it an effective antioxidant. Due to these properties, sodium hydrosulfite is sensitive to storage conditions and must be protected from air to avoid its oxidation. Its solution has a pungent odor reminiscent of sulfur dioxide. This occurs due to its ability to release this sulfur dioxide when dissolved in water or in contact with acids. Sodium hydrosulfite also has disinfectant properties and is used in cleaning processes.

Safety precautions ought to be taken when handling the chemical, as it can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system. It is also recommended to use appropriate protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses and a dust filter mask if there is a risk of inhaling dust or aerosols.
